Comanche Flute

Get Adobe Flash player

The Courting Flute was used by the Comanches and several other American Indian Tribes.  It is one of the few instruments reserved for solo performances and was used by men to court women.  Each song was a gift of love for its special listener.  The flute was made to mimic its owner's body.

This flute was handmade by renowned Comanche Artist and Flute Player Doc Tate Nevaquaya (1932-1996).   His music inspired a whole generation of American Indian musicians including R. Carlos Nakai, Ed Wapp, Tom Ware, and Kevin Locke.
